Ah, I had to laugh at the end of your vlog. I was a delivery driver for 7 years with Pizza Hut in KY. Our area had a few deaf. Your experience reminded me of a few others I had over the years. Screwball customers and funny pets sometimes made the deliveries interesting or not so interesting. I was often the only deaf driver on the eastern end of the city, which didn’t bother me. I created my own version of customer service. Lots more I could say, but I could go on for awhile.
hahaha you’re FUNNY… altho its unbelievable how they’d treat a delivery person – with their attitude and their lousy tipping. sigh. let’s have pizza delivered to us while we’re waiting for the next wave, eh? heh.
That is a good tactic to convince a skeptical hearing boss to hire you, by giving you a two weeks trial period. The story of the deaf consumer is amusing.
We have a good number of deaf pizza delivery people here in metro DC.
Your vlog left me laughing and hungry for a pizza already!! We have a few deaf people working at Dominos Pizza. When my husband and I were feeling desperate for extra cash, I went over to Dominos to see if I could get a job delivering pizza, the manager was overeager to hire me. What an attitude he had! But I changed my mind and decided not to go for it.
Yes, I was one of them, I worked for Domains Pizza at Washington, DC K St NE Unit that serving Gallaudet and Capital Hill. I was hired without problem. they did not asked me about deaf issues. Even this place has TTY that I take orders like everyone. Yes, deaf customers did not pay good tips. Employees at this place are trying to avoid Gallaudet. Outside of Gallaudet customers give good tips even it is not safe area. Gallaudet gave average of 50 cents and outside of Gallaudet, average of 3 dollars and at capitall hill area, around 5 dollars. it was in 1989 and 1990.
Your vlogs are entertaining as always, especially this one about your experience as a pizza delivery driver. Yeah, it is typical of deaf people to be lousy tippers….
Keep up your good work as an ASL vlog entertainer!
Yes, one of my deaf friend delivered pizzas for a while. My deaf husband used to deliver pizzas years ago in the evening when he was an instructor of the college for the Deaf.
One deaf guy used to work for Dominos Pizza here and never had him delivered to my house back then. He worked for a year or so before he relocated for a better career.
I was a manager for Dominos Pizza. I also even delivered pizzas when I was Dominos Pizza delivery person when I was 19 years old. And there’s a story of where I had to deliver a pizza to a older (and ugly) lady who always wore dark negligee’ gown when she came to the door to collect the pizza. And tipped me $5 every time. So, when I got the address again, I gave it over to a newby driver.
I used to work at that K st Dominio Pizza back in 1989 deliverying pizza on bike and car. One evening on a 2 stop bike run, one was for Gallaudet then another somewhere on G st near union station? I got stabbed in arm (2) and (1) in chest. 5 black guys tried to rob me but failed. Miracle they let me go and rode bike back to store. Ended up going to Howard Hospital and of course never had any interpreter for me from 1030pm Friday night until they sew me up about 7am the next morning. Of course Gallaudet was the worst tippers sorry to say!
Pinky eye… was that a deaf pizza deliver’s way of tipping you?
Maybe it was one of those former deaf clients getting revenge!
Great vlog – my brother has worked for Hungry Howie’s (pizza) since he was 14 and still the only job he’s holding now…but has moved up right under Vice President and he’s only 31.
Anyway, I’ve tried asking him to hire me as a driver.
Never thought of a trial… but I don’t want to do it anymore!
I have too many stories on my pizza experience in three years.
One night, I drove into the wealth residence for Papa John delivery order and saw the resident and Domino driver chatted in ASL. Huh, I was confused about that since I was at the right address. So…I brought the pizza to the HH customer and deaf female driver. I greeted in ASL, “Hello, thanks for calling Papa John Pizza”. Their jaws dropped all the way down….
Naturally, some deaf customers always gave me lousy tips.
Jon, tell me about your horrible experience when you use the intercom at the Condo/Apt door. All I did was singing “Oh, Papa Pizza” as a opera singer. I always watched the customers’ facial expressions.
I Dennis Smith of Houston, Tx wish to let you know that I love to be a good tipper anywhere because I am proud of myself as a deaf person giving a good example to hearing waitresses and deliverers. Out of my good heart I want to see them to feel good and appreciated. And I would give generous tips to deaf waitresses and deliverers. Period!!!
Sooo funny – lol. I am a hearing person with deaf parents and can totally understand your desire to find employment in the very competitive hearing world. I think that’s it wonderful you have not allowed the hearing world to hold you back!! Way to go!!! And as for the pizza delivery – I always tip at least $3 hoping that would at least cover their gas to bring it to me. – so yes – you can eat your pizza now. enjoy!
I’ve had a friend who worked for Pizza Hut. However, he did not deliver a single pizza in his 3-year tenure with Pizza Hut which disappointed me because I believe that deaf people can do it.
That’s good to know that you have showed everyone that a deaf delivery boy can do it.
I agree about tips. Whenever I’m in a deaf group at a restaurant, I would encourage them to tip more and better.
I’ve had a friend who is still working for domino’s Pizza in Miami, Florida. He told me few stories based on his experinces while he delievered the pizza to the hearing customers. One of his customer felt awkward to know that he was actually a ‘ deaf pizza delievery person’. He said it is good experince because his customer asked him “how can u drive with out hear any noises in the background”? He said it is simple answer? I have eyes to see. A customer felt fool and realized that we are mutual in many ways.
It is good to know that we have abilities is to educate hearing people in different places instead teach ASL at colleges, or Unviersities. There are so many advantages for us to teach/exposure our deaf culture to our work, friends, or to the strangers.
Hey, I’ve looked through your Vlog’s and it came out really awesome.. Keep it up
I once employed as a pizza delivery person for the Domino Pizza on K Street after the disastarous fisaco with the Gallaudet Career Center\’s summer employment slot assignment. That was the Summer 1989.
I had to take the pizza delivery person employment as a LAST RESORT. I wanted to be in the Washington, DC area when the Deaf Way I (First) took the place.
I never got any problem of being hired as a pizza delivery person. I had numerous interesting experiences when delivered pizzas to various socioeconomic segements – impovershed area like low-income housings (HUD) and well-off houses.
I got good tip money from real poor people as compared to finanically well-off people (no tip or just leftover monetary change – coins).
I often told poor people that were not necessary to tip me. One elderly impoversihed African American refused to hear about not tipping me. She gave me $10 dollar in tip money. I did not forget her generosity. Every time, I drive past her place and give her free pizzas from time to time which nobody come to pick up pizzas or wrong orders.
I DELIVERED pizzas to Linda Jordan, wife of IKJ (Iriving King Jordan) during the Summer 1989. Guess what? Linda made the replusive comment to me – \”I never know that deaf people could work as a pizza delivery person!\” I replied \”Why not\”. She turned paternalistic toward me – \’You know ….\”
Linda Jordan did not tip me at all.
Every orders from the Gallaudet University, I always find the way to avoid delivering pizzas to Gally students or faculty members because of my own PRIDE being employed as a pizza delivery person.
Several times, I had to deliver pizzas as the parlor manager ordered me. I always managed to get tips from Gally summer students or faculty members by bluntly remind about the importance of showing appreciation for speedier pizza deliver when they were still hot, etc. Or I would stand more few minutes and wait on people to tip me.
I need the tip money to pay for gas and other auto expense, etc.
I did encounter some unpleasant experience like several guys pulled their trousers or groped me inapporiately. Two ladies exposed their breasts to me.
Another incident at the U.S. Marine Barrack on the Eighth Street and L Street, SE. That heavy raining soaked on me and pizza protective cover boxes.
i was allowed to get in the heavy security perimeter and delivered pizzas to handful of Marines at one of the barrack. I did not expect several Marine guys grabbed my buttock and kissed my lips. I was kinda dumbfounded about their approach since they were in the military.
I quitted when the summer was all over. I made pretty good dough over $4,000 in just three months.
oh, i am so proud of you! it shows that deaf person can do! sometime deaf can work even better than hearing person but not always,ha. take care, darrell
This is all good news to me! How come it is not more widely known? The only drawback I can see is our poor balance. If I tried to deliver pizza at night I would fall on my face!
I used to work at Domino Pizza years ago, I took order from phone and deliver pizzas. I’m hard of hearing with hearing aids and they put amplify phone on the phone. Kinda like black one that you could slip it on the phone only when I use it. I had that job for two years.
Debbie, same thing for me except no phone amplifier while I was a driver and years later decided to try being a manager of a Dominos Pizza store. Actually I had the opportunity to manage 3 different stores. Thank gawd I got out of that business when it was time to get my M.S. degree.
Great story. When I was a student at Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID) in Texas, there are 3 Deaf pizza delivery drivers at that time. One work for Pizza Hut, another works for Domino’s and the third for Little Caesar’s. Whoa!! What a competition that town has!
Hey Jon,
another great story by you! Thanks. It’s a first for me realizing there are that many Deaf pizza delivery guys.
as for Deaf tippers….I believe tipping is very cultural and experience related. For example, many young hearing people work as waiters, delivery guys, hotel attendants..all tip dependent jobs…and they and their friends and families realize that giving tips do make differences so they carry on to other young kids to support them better. For a group of people who do not experience jobs that depend on tips (for examples, rich folks or Deaf people)…they are kind of at loss not comprehending what is involved in tipping and feel tipping is a rip off on them so they may resist it. Only thing I believe we can become “better tippers” is to be more aware of their lives and jobs, even tho we hardly have that kind of jobs… My experience tells me that once a Deaf person realizes how those people depend on tips, they can gtive good tips! (I do try…even tho sometimes I am not sure what is appropriate amount for certain situations….I try to learn as much as possible tho.
Hi I know I have seen alot of jobs that many supervisors or bosses that have many skeptical with deaf doing some jobs like delivery pizzas or something that they think deaf can’t. Well here I am hard of hearing/deaf working as a bartender/waiteress for past 4 years. Believe me it’s not easy job but the more I get to know all the people that comes here often and they get use to me. I do have some good days and some bad days. I don’t see very much deaf people around here just few.
this brought me back to one night many years ago when I was with my friend at the bar at one deaf convention. My friend, an expert lipreader, lipreaded one of the waitresses at the bar who said: “Deaf people are nice, but they don’t tip.” Ouch!
My boss suggested that I share your vlog with our deaf students at Calif school f/t Deaf in Fremont and empower them to do the same (convince the employers that they can do the job). I think it’s a good idea…so thanks for sharing your employment experience!
Good one! I used to be a delivery driver for Pizza Hut for less than a year before I went back to the college that time. There were 4 of us were deaf drivers, too. Then I used to cook for pizza. I had some good experince. I still miss one thing was eating pizza for a free! LOL
Thanks for sharing this with all of us.
I used to worked domino’s pizza for 4 years, as pizzamaker but few deafies used to work as pizza deliver. They(boss) didn’t ask deafies how they can commication Boss just hired them as pizza deliver. and You are right whoever order themself deaf didnt give good tip to hearing or deaf pizza delivery that s sad…. from michgian
hello , yeah i have been working at the pizza hut for 5 yrs and yeah i have notice that when i delivery to the deaf people and they didnt give us a good tips.oh shoot what a shame !
oh one thing about how they feels about hring deaf people to work at the pizza delivery but there is nothing wrong as long if they can understand each other . if not then thats plms but there is a way to solve the plms .good luck to all deafies to get that job at the pizza dilvery .
I loved delivering pizza back in the old days when I was at RIT/NTID. I delivered for Pudgie’s Pizza, not sure if they are still there or not. Anyway, I agree – Deaf people were the WORSE tippers!! Many times, no tips at all. When we got a call to deliver to Tower A or anywhere on campus, most of the delivery guys tried to avoid taking the delivery because it was always guaranteed to be a low tip or no tip.
I have more than six years of pizza delivery employment service at Domino Pizza. I have no complaint with customers no matter how good I speak. I advised my managers at various Domino Pizza locations how to communicate with Deaf customers over the phone. Use the Relay Service and call the operator to dial the deaf customer’s phone number if the order is getting messed up. My managers cordially care of deaf customers. They hired two other deaf applicants as Pizza Delivery Men as well.
Hello Jio,
My son Gary Taylor is deaf that he worked Pizza deleviry for 8 years in Florida City, Florida. He like to work very much and earned good pay! I am proud of him, what he can work and be happy himself.
thats a good one……. i am deaf.. i work… and met someone that try to sell abc card… to people at the parking lot….. and came to me.. and try to sell to me…… i signed “why dont you work?” she was shocked…..
Ha, ha. Way to go, Jon! Deaf people deserve various of jobs as they desire to work. I used to work for Pizza Pit and Rocky Rococo for several years in my past year. Boy, I had so much of odd experience while delivering pizzas. For example, one pizza needs to be delivered to that place. That place happened to have full of strippers!!! Oh boy…
gosh!!! you are soo funny!!! we loved your story. We agreed with you about the tips. We have heard so much that so many don’t give tips. Thanks for good laughs.
Yes, My children”s deaf father did work for four years in Charlotte, N.C. He got alot of good tip. O F C, Anyone can work at any job. Thanks for sharing the news with me.
Hey dude, this is really a great story! I knew it, Deafies CAN do delivery and be able to be independant at the same time. Of course there hearing ppls out there have some doubts about us deafies and wondering if we are able to do it or not.. I am glad that you got through it and came out great!
It would be nice to see deaf dude or gal come knocking on my door delivering hot pizza to my house!
LOL, not surprised!! I used to work with Pizza Hut delivery driver! Plus, I used to drive UPS delivery truck! Ahhhhhh Deaf?!?!?! LOL How dumb hearing perspective to Deaf Culture??
If anyone of you wondering how much tip should be paid to waitress, and delivery drivers, I wanted to let you all know that all waitress only make average of $2.50 to $3.00 a hour working on their shift, so the tip should be about 6% or 7% of the bill. For example when I get a bill for 30.00 I always tip the waitress $5.00, even though when it only around 22.00 I tip the waitress 3.50 sometime 5.00 anyway bec I know they are struggling to make a living.
The delivery drivers should get the same percent of the tips too as well. They have to pay for their gas to do deliveries.
Of course I noticed old ppls tip lousy to waitress bec I used to work as a dishwasher/busser at the restraunt and noticed that a lot of old peoples tips totally LOUSY, wanna to know how much old ppls tip? 50 cents!!! I am not kidding! I think that really messed up! My friend would get pissed off and said it not right. (she’s a waitress)
If you are not sure how much to tip, just use calaculator and figure out the cost of tip to pay. For example: 30.00 – 6% = 4.00 tip.. I think I did it correctly, bec I do not use .6 on cacualator. Good luck!
I truly enjoyed your vlog so much! I think it was truly terrific how you went into apply for this position, and so positively sold yourself to this manager, that because you are deaf, doesn’t mean you cannot do the job! You used knowledgable strategies to make the customer feel comfortable, and it also made a what could have been a challenging experience a simple one. You took a negative and turned it into a postive!! I admired what you did, and hopefully more deaf that read your vlog will know that they can do anything too by just giving it a chance like you did. Your boss must be so impressed with you!!! It’s not easy to be working in a hearing enviroment, but, you took the challenge and succeeded!! Kudos to you!!!!
Wave Hand Hi to everyone ,
I former ex work with dominio pizza delivery in california about 1997 in april that time I been tried to get a job decide to stop by Dominio Pizza and see if they will hiring deaf or not .. the young guy test on me want come to see him again three days rows I puzzle my mind why he want me come to see him then go back home for three days with his own decision tell me come back at 10 am I went to home wait next day then I come back see him again same 3 days then he give me application for the job I was so damn sure excited have that job soon after that He interview with me only 5 min then start work he said someone will training me for two days I said ok .. one young lady hearing took me training me how to do that knock the door and show pizza price that simply so I did good job and my boss love me so much and he spoil me too much and he was very cool I work night shift and overtime almost everyday … i only work 7 months then leave for my good reasonable personal I sure I miss that job and my old boss that I never forget..
I sure ur expersion face real very funny made me laugh so hard and cool impress good one .. High Five wink smile .
of course i used to worked for Domino pizza almost 1 year. i was best 3 place delivery in a month in 1980s. also i know mydea friends worked in denver too. .
There are several deaf guys here in Olathe, KS, who deliver pizza for Papa John. As far as I know, there are no problems. Once or twice while I was at my friends’ house, a deaf guy delivered pizza. It was really cool having him deliver pizza to us. He was very professional and cordial.
Kudos to Papa John for having the right attitude to hire deaf persons to deliver pizza
Very intresting…. That is good point! You are ASL I can see.. I used to work KFC/Taco bell delivery deaf people know I worked there in past. They ordered too many deaf my boss keep call me need to delivery over deaf customer lol!!!! Good memories!
hey great vlog had to laugh cuz i used to work for dominos pizza for 12 years as a driver i fight fight to become a manager they wont let me cuz if im alone at the store who will answer the phone so me out cant be a manager sucks so i quit change my new career as a dog groomer cool all you have to do is to educated those hearing people that WE CAN DO EVERYTHING EXCEPT CANT HEAR!!!
This is a very interested story to view what you said. Thanks for sharing video about Can a Deaf person delivery Pizza? Deaf can do anything except hear.
I have known for years that deaf people are stinky tippers. I wish someone would teach the deaf people how to tip better. I am deaf, too, but I always give a good tip.
HEY! I give you a lot of credit, most deaf are on welfare, at least you are trying to work! Give this guy a job! Go for it! Any employer will be happy to have such a nice pleasant young man!
Great Vlog! My friends except for Michelle remember you used to be my roommate and told me to check it out! I guess you are leaving a huge mark on San Diego and everyone knows who you are! Glad to know you and family are doing well! MIss you all! Hugs!!!! and I defintely agree with you about the lousy tips LOL! Hope you had good pizza!
I used to work Pizza Hut Delivery for 2 or 3 years back in 90′s in Fremont, Calif. Like you said that you had no problem to communicate with hearing customers by showing them receipt for price. Same with me but there was one night that I will NEVER forget. I delivered pizza to apartment. I knocked the door and the lady opened and stared at me. I showed her the slip of pizza price. She seemed to ignore it and still stared at me. I felt kind of odd like what’s wrong with her? Was she shocked to see me being Deaf Pizza Delivery or what? Somehow, I didn’t realize that She was a BLIND lady.
Sure would let you eat your pizza, however I would love to serve you homemade pizza. Every New Year Eve our family always have homemade pizza dough, tomato sauce, etc. We enjoy all the hours before New Year come in. I do believe that D/deaf person can deliver pizzas. About tipping, sad…
Good that Deaf people can deliver pizza but one thing I am “tired” of is “sterotyping”… Deaf people always give lousy tip as you signed. So does hearing people. I know many Deaf friends and myself do give good tips.. So perhaps you can say “ahhh this Deaf person gave me lousy tip”. We gotta stop the “sterotyping” about Deaf giving lousy tips.
Come on, anyone can be pizza driver such as I was for 13 years with Domino’s Pizza. And never encountered any bad experience during my entire tenure with customers. All I did was pointing my ear at the same time saying “I’m deaf” and revealed their total amount by showing them their order on pizza boxes. Had few customers repeatedly asked for me to deliver their orders. Would have been the store manager if I was RIFed from my other employment.
BTW, at first I thought one distraught customer punched your right eye but relieved it wasn’t. Whew… Go finish eating your pizza before it turns cold.
It would be accurate to tip 15% or 20% of the total cost (not including the taxes, not 6% or 7%). If the total cost is $10 – then we should tip $1.50 – if the total cost is $20, then the tip should be $3
I am Deaf and woman…used to be pizza delivery in Maryland area for few months after graduated from college. No problem being hired. Never had a chance to meet deaf consumers. U know some deaf consumers do not realize that they have to pay tips or not know how to calculate it. We have to educate them.
I used to be a Domino delivery driver, it was a good experience. Honestly hearing people do tips well and deaf tend to tip lousy but hearing people can tip lousy too regardless of being late or something like that. I often have a note written down ready to apologize for being late due to many people calling for delivery and appreciate them for choosing Domino pizza and left, people do seem to feel appreciate when I as a delivery driver appreciate them anyway!
I’m a HH myself and I always give my tips more than $3 depend how much you order. If someone give you a small tip then don’t go back as you have to be confirm. Explain to your boss , Hey! Look time of services and mileages on your car , they should expect to pay more than $3(depend on order). You may corrected me if this is a wrong ideas. It is up to you.
Keep up with your success.
Hey! I do not realize that, Deaf ppls, have to pay tips or not know how to calculate it. I was shocked after that Vlog come in, I think so, Deaf school should have to educate deaf students before they graducated any states for deaf schools. I hate to tell u that they(deaf school) did not teach me at all. I am not shame on deaf school had education behind hearing education get along….. So, I learn what my lesson from u say. So, I am deaf and leaglly blind. I am glad to watch what is ur experience. In Thomasville, NC, USA, at Domino Pizza do know me very well, they dont mind every time I call them on VP, but they were surprised that I use VP since VP started to come in… I am happy w/ VP That’s what I can talk to them, goodQ they understand what I want to order pizza than type TTY over phone give me a hard time cuz of long typing. VP is very fast to order a pizza!!! Smile!
Also, I wish that I am back to be student that time from 1980′s….Darn! I cant buid Time machine, will give me troubleshooting that somthing dont work right! pfft! Good luck for deaf ppl will try out to get job for delievery PIZZA.
OH, by the way, Hearing pizza delievery can show me the cost, how much is…. same way, Deaf pizza delievery do! Yep!!!!
congratulions. you suceeded in delivring pizza. but one thing you prove to the entire world outside– both deaf and hearing people that deaf people cant work any higher than delivring pizzas. how about being a deaf lawyer, mayor, or hell, a deaf president?
i dont mean to offend you or anyone deaf working at a pizza place but just because we’re deaf doesnt mean hearing people are better than us.
It was fun watching your story and seeing how you convinced the boss to hire you. But I find it sad that you had to prove yourself that deaf people can do it by offering 2 weeks trial.
Yeah can ask for one month if any of you have to deal with imbecile hearing bosses in the future. (*rolling eyes*)
My friend sent me about your funny vidieo. I was ex. pizza hut delivier for more than close to 2 years and got a better job. As far you were very funny about stop by deaf’s place. Also about the tip that sad! Same to me as I deliver 15 pizzas at the hearing place had blast party. Guess what? Where is my ‘f’ Tip? What an “A——!
Dave
I have to thank you for the ASL text to share with the ASL community. I, as the ASL teacher in the Deaf school, need ASL stories/texts/poems for my ASL students (elementary) as their first language just like teaching English to hearing students. This pizza story applied to ASL curriculum well.
Keep it up.
I hope you can deliver the pizza to Canada where I live. I will give you a great tip.
R in elbow
Hi, It was awesome to see your vlog! You’re making me laugh so hard because of your expression. I can’t stop laugh until 5 mins. So, it was good to see how you convinced the boss to hire you. Good Job!
Awesome video log, I used to deliver for Dominos, breadux pisa, pizza hut twice, Gus’ pizza in tempe, All interesting experience, the best experience was delivering pizza to a naked chick, completely forgot she was naked and just smiled the whole time. and also i had delivered to a blind man. it was sooo hard communicating to that dude. how do I set up a similar type of website like you do?
Jon, You sure have bright my day!! You made me laugh! I never work for pizza deliver or a deaf person deliver pizza to my place. I know that deaf person CAN deliver pizza cuz my
ex- roommate used to deliver pizza before. Of course, I myself always give a better tip to deaf or hearing people.
Keep it up good work, Jon!
I remember when I was high school student 1990 to 1993. My deaf math teacher held second job as Pizza delivery at Pizza Hut in Fremont, Calif. His car once was stolen during delivery the pizza. Never again he left keys in car! LOL!
About 7 years ago, I used to work for Domino Pizza delivering pizzas for over 2 and half years in Gahanna/New Albany, Ohio (just northeast of Columbus area). On my very first day of working as a delivery driver, after making few fairly okay deliveries, I went to this customer’s house in New Albany, delivering a $18 worth of pizzas. This woman came down with nothing but a black bathrobe, a messed up hair and a smile. She gave me $20 for the pizzas AND a $20 in tip! I thanked her and went back to Domino’s store. I told my manager about it. Know what he told me? In his ten years in the business, he never had an employee-driver ever receive a $20 tip on his/her first day for delivering pizzas. Huh.
Other veteran drivers were either jealous or surprised, scouted out the call and address of that customer in hope they would make future delivery runs there. I just let it go and continued to make deliveries for the next 2 and half years, with a lot of funny and unfunny situations to remember by.
Deaf can work in delivering or making pizzas. If anyone have a problem in getting employment from pizza companies for delivering or making pizzas, tell them to come to this vlog and check it out.
Some hearing people tip poorly or don’t tip as all, even I made deliveries in timely fashion or even quicker. During my time with Domino’s, I tried inasmuch I can do to avoid going to a specific neighborhood in Gahanna that is notoriously full of bad or no tippers… all hearies. One neighborhood out of 12 neighborhoods in the area.
That story interests me about deaf who deliver pizza. What a amazing story! Wow! I am proud of you who can work as a pizza delivery. I want to see all deafies who can show pride to hearing people in the world . “We are not afraid of hearing, period! We can do it! ”
Uh? Where are your VLog’s captions? Your videos are on Google Video, so it’s easy for you to add closed captions. Adding captions adds accessibility to people who are Blind, Low–Vision, and DeafBlind. It also helps people who have ASL as a Second Language or do not understand ASL. Plus, your VLogs are searchable.
Anyway, that’s enough about captions. I have no doubt that a person who is Deaf can be deliver pizzas. Whether or not a person who is Deaf can tip a person who delivers pizzas well is an entirely different matter, but I won’t stereotype, because just because one person does it doesn’t mean everyone does it.
In conclusion, I did enjoy your video. It gives us a good experiance.
Great Vlog… good point about being a poor tipper. I think that maybe most of us don’t realize that tipping is a part of “good practice” at resturants and pizza delivery.
How much tip should we give? I know that at resturants, we should give 15 – 20% depending on how well you liked the food, environment, waiter/waitress’ service, etc. But what about bars, pizza delivery, hotel baggage carrier, etc?
I used to work Denny’s as waitnress in 90″s but everytime when i service deaf people. they NEVER give me a TIP. SAD… No one has taught them to give tip when ppl work hard with 2.50 an hour. I am not kidding…….
Thanks for explaining about tip to the pizza delivery. I thought that that pizza stores already add few dollars with the order price for delivery before I give delivery man $1. I thought that few additional dollars and $1. would be over $3.00 together ??? I will learn more about the tips with pizza delivery . I mostly call pizza to order then I always pick up it ready . I think that both deaf and hearing customers do not tip sometimes . Your face expressions are giving laughs . Smile
oh yes in here south carolina have deaf delivery i only know 3 deaf people work pizza delivery. but funny one of them used to work at SC School for the Deaf and the Blind Coach football but he move to MSSD anyway when he was work at scsdb he did work pizza delivery. but he just voluntneer for fun as keep him busy. sometime he told funny something happened to him about deaf people got confused because THEY KNOW HIM who coach football! can u imagine that? hahahahahahaha keep up vlog u doing good on vlog i always CHECK deaf read EVERYDAY i love deaf read since i just check out Deafeye.com it’s start where i found and learn more about BLOGS/VLOGS i mean WOW i am impressing with that stuff since i check it out know when? since 5 days i can’t STOP check it out whoa! i mean i learning a lot about deaf way, discuss deaf issues, and MANY THING! that’s nice! WOW! i glad i just come check it out yes i enjoy discuss and learning. “LEARNING” will never stop we will learning till we die that’s it! i am right?
Introduce to myself that Michael VanSlooten who native of NJ many years and currently live in Long Island. I formerly employee of Domino Pizza in Teaneck NJ almost three years. They hired me with Job coach. Of course deaf can do it but be sure have driver license clean record and car insurance very important to be awareness among community and world. Yes, deaf always have lousy tips many time when I go restaurant with friend or bar or anywhere but I never do that lousy tip myself. Right now, I am Shoe Supervisor at Kohls (retails) that how I am successful throughout career toward attitude and work hard and dedicated the service at Kohls for five years now. Myself I graduated from NTID there that time I do see many deaf did work Domino Pizza deliver to dorm of NTID when I ordered and do that pay either small or large tips. You can do even DEAF POWER yea!!!!
Its no surprised for me… I, Used be Pizza Hut Deliever…. How? my friend is deaf and his brother is a manager.. that’s how I got hired.. Yea, its easy to deliever.. then I filled it out other pizza hut… got hired, they liked me bec I was the fastest driver.. No, I do not speedly like darn INDY500. How? I avoiding traffic lights… Using private streets… When they complaint, know what I says to them? “Call my boss and see how much for late” out of questions… agreed and lower price, I see a happy man….
Deaf always, always left a small tip but hey, Respect them for smaller income… if you don’t like it, tell to SSI/SSA to give them deaf a more money… You know how they do… “NOOO weee caan’t”..
Later… many years later… Deaf signs and wants to order… One told deaf lady, I go get Greg, he’s deaf.. She dont believe… I said “Hello, May I take your order? what? Yea OFC I am DEEEAAAAF!, look my ASL.” duck head and believed me…
HA,,,GOOD STORY….AND GREAT ENDING.. BUT I NEVER KNEW DEAFIES CAN DELIVERED..I’M FROM NY…NEVER SEES ONE….. BUT THAT’S GREAT AND I’M GLAD DEAFIES CAN DO ALL SAME AS HEARING….. WE ARE NO DIFFERENCE

I work pizza place total 11 years different places in sc, I got aot interested expirence some of them are deafies are lousy tippers even they e mailed me to give them employee discount still no tippers but some do give me tips but I usually get their money but never give back in a changes its like who give a damn… but its fun to work as delivery bc no boss watchin I ditchin to see friends chattn and knew pizza gets cold I still delivery that pizzza to person late and said nothin still got tips I use my deaf excuses lolol but they sure did called the store why pizzas cold we didn’t care knew we made too much money, I used to be serious abt job but now things changed we flexable at pizza hut I see a lot funny things going on I even delivery alot stripper clubs they expect me to give them free pizza for lap dances. and I even seen them nude. Some thing I hate when I come to their house they speak thru doors and look thru peek hole and knew won’t open til I speak its “pizza hut” u know how deaf couldn’t hear to respondin sometimes we have to stand few more min til then open and apologizing and or go back to the store some co workers or manager have call them and explain situation abt deaf person delivery to their doors … again no tips? Its full of crap. But its cool, and I even hate when they ask me to get their change over 50 dollar or 100 dollar bill they want car pool go to nearest gas station or stores get change then drop back still no damn tip? So from now on, ( I shake mi head) I got no change for larger bill I told them either they get change or come to the store. some of them make me stay in their house wanna sit down til somebody go get change come back, I still don’t get no tip, damn them. and I sometimes customer ask for parmeian cheese packets, when they live 3 story apartment .. I have go down stairs to my car and get it and go back up to give them but still no tip? Sometimes a customer complaint and curse in my face I give them stanky attitude and I shove my hand to their face and as in gesture say I’m deaf, they stop speakin and person said I’m so sorry but guess what they do gave me a biggest tip. That’s funny… and I even delivery to another resaurant especially mcd they real goofy…its right across the street from our pizza place they place order to delivery in beautiful warm weather… why not take a walk? I came there still no tip! What a retarded. Anyway I been doing so many things @ pizza hut, 5 star pizza, and za brick oven pizza I do anything excpt phones .. And by the way ur v log is funny its remind me some of mi expirence lol

That is a good tactic to convince a skeptical hearing boss to hire you, by giving you a two weeks trial period. The story of the deaf consumer is amusing.

Again, thanks for the great story! Adam

That was a fabulous story..

Hey Jon,
another great story by you!

Good luck!

Andrea Said:

It would be accurate to tip 15% or 20% of the total cost (not including the taxes, not 6% or 7%). If the total cost is $10 – then we should tip $1.50 – if the total cost is $20, then the tip should be $3

Great vlog, Jon.

Addendum:
Some hearing people tip poorly or don’t tip as all, even I made deliveries in timely fashion or even quicker. During my time with Domino’s, I tried inasmuch I can do to avoid going to a specific neighborhood in Gahanna that is notoriously full of bad or no tippers… all hearies. One neighborhood out of 12 neighborhoods in the area.

Jon,
Great Vlog… good point about being a poor tipper.
How much is appropriate?
