I like the signs as they are. Going thru organic and natural progress. The basic signs to me are of convenient and for rapid signing purposes. Concept already established so, not have to be exact. ASL is abstract and it needs not linguistic interference, but flexibility. One can offer own interpretations of sign preferences.

Count me in as one of those folks who prefers to fingerspell “vlog” and “blog”. They both are only four letters long and very easy to fingerspell. Also, only need one hand while the new signs use both hands.

michele, offensive as in? I don’t get it. can you explain a bit clear what it compares to what offensive sign? thanks!

I like the blog sign by gnarly..makes sense. Like Joh said, nothing is official yet.

Hi Jon,

I don’t know if I am the only one who feels this way but I am not comfortable with the sign, “vlog”, especially if someone signs it in the wrong way, it looks as if it is an offensive sign if you get my drift.

I’m sure there is a better sign out there but no one has come up with it yet. Otherwise, I would go with the majority if this is the sign to go with.

Before I found out the sign for "blog" by deafosphere, I have been signing "blog" as if I botch on a wall.. as if I write something to be put on the wall for everybody to read. :-)

I’m little reserved about those signs. Suppose I’m a Deaf photographer who took a lot of pictures of Deaf surfers, I posted the photos (zillions of them). How do we sign for it if my blog is dedicated to posting photos only like Flickr, photo-sharing site?

I prefer to use “vlog” sign for posting photos, photos of artworks, scanned images, etc.

For vlog, I like to explore using the “framing” sign for vlogs (like the movie director put two hands together to frame the shot. That’s the sign for vlog I think is better.

I still don’t like the sign as used for ‘blog’. When I read blog enries, I’m still looking at the computer screen. I rarely print out blogs and read them leisurely on my own time at my favorite barcalounger, ya know?

But, the sign for vlog certainly ‘feels’ appropriate and doesn’t offend my notion of what signs should look like and how its movement should be conveyed.

Maybe a little more clarity about a blog is needed. A blog is a web log, not necessarily on paper. It is a written, typed log of thoughts, experiences, insights, etc., like a journal, but on the web (internet) and it is shared with others and made public (unlike a journal). The sign we see the DeafRead community use for blog is because it is typed or written words. The sign we use for vlog is to show video clips on the screen as you clarified.
