ASL Poetry: BULLY ASL
Download:
(2:15 minutes) Video hosted by videoserver.us
This is my first ASL poetry vlog; I have created this poetry for one month. Also, I did on purpose to produce a film in black and white as symbol of yin yang. The big picture is showed as being a deaf as Deafhood welcomes all deaf people to sign or not!

I thought that was beautiful… I was kinda put off at first when you were signing SEE as if to mock those people but I knew you are not that kind of person. Then I saw the moral point of the story at the end.
It actually bought me tears.
Lately there have been a lot of frictions and it’s quite frustrating.
I’m just tired of this…but thank you for showing us such a beautiful poetry and that we CAN get along together and respect each other, learn from each other!
Life’s too short.
Thanks, Jon. You rock.

To sum this up – Im so thrilled that I’ve seen more and more of us are becoming better communicators by using digital technology into some kind of art form.
It is amazing to see how things are popping up!
Jon – keep up with your wonderful work, your creativity and most of all, your compassion.

That was a good one you produced, Jon!
Once I was a SEE signer, I struggled to fit in the ASL community, it was hard and frustrating. So I could relate with this poetry that you made. It is not our fault that we learned SEE first, blame it on the system. We need to remind ourselves about this constantly when we meet other people who are not eloquently fluent in ASL and welcome them warmly and help them learn ASL.

Interesting to see between SEE and ASL, this video is good for all hearing people who learn about deaf culture, or ASL so it would help them to understand the difference between ASL & SEE. Good ones!
(By the way, your SEE is almost too PERFECT, also your facial expression with a bit tense while you sign SEE! LOL. Also Your ASL look so natural and relax! )
Thumb-Up!

Jon Lenois,
That was really good piece of art you just posted. I really admired the contrast of your two characters and the backgrounds as well. Yinyang? Freaking creative. The end showed you got really great editing skills along with your acting skills as well.
I suggest you submit your work to film festivals, both hearing and deaf. Guaranteed, that video will get accepted in the deaf film festivals at least. Guaranteed. We need more deaf artists like you. Keep it up and continue to create amazing, touching clips like that. You got GREAT potential, for real. I hope to be working with you someday if you ever get into the film or acting fields

You rock by blasting my mind with your versions of SEE and ASL.
I certainly hope your vlog will make some deaf people realize not to reject those who use SEE or any other communication modes and be encouraged to learn ASL.
Like some of the commenters said before me, it was not their fault but the system causing them to be that way. ASL users just need to welcome them with open arms and show them their hands in a flying motion. Deafhood is the goal. Great vlog, Jon!

A very nice poetic expression here!
I loved the quality of the vlog! Keep that UP! Maybe, (its my opinion) you don’t need to explain why you used this and that, maybe you may want to let your audience stay captive and “figure” things out as a more interesting topic provoking aspect? HUH? Just an idea.
I would love to use this to my ASL class as well along with others, can I?
Purpose: Let them see there are poetry given by Deaf and how that they are expressed in a medium format, artistically, and of course in living colors! I teach at two universities and a community college.
Keep those expressive hands moving …

Your video gave me the chills! Beautifully done and your message was seen loud and clear!
The part when the SEE signer said “I’m Lonely” then it switched to the ASL signer “Where’s the rest of deaf people?”, just wow…amazing how a simple message can be so profound and tear-jerking. I was a SEE signer from when I was in pre school ALL the way to the high school. So I can relate to the loneliness (being the only deaf student in my high school class). Imagine my surprise when I entered college and saw so many deaf people (I did not go to Gallaudet…it was a state unversity where they offered a deaf program)). To make a long story short, I was finally accepted into the community by the ASL signers and I learned to adapt to the ASL, thanks to them! Funny how a strong ASL supporter who openly mocked me for my SEE signing and made me cry the first day of college ended up being one of my close friends, who knew?! *smiles*
Anyway, thanks for sharing your video. It brought back a flood of memories, both good and bad! You are truly an artist. Too bad I do not have a web cam right now….all the vlogs are inspiring me to go out and get one! (I am kind of intimidated because I am not exactly very good at ASL yet….but I am trying!).
Sign on!
Jessica Downing Said:
on August 12, 2007 at 11:04 pm
I watched this for an assignment for class (Fred from above is my professor), I’m not too advanced in my signing, so it took many, many views for me to understand what exactly was going on. Even then, I had a really hard time understanding, and didn’t get the real message. Then I read the comments underneath, and it helped so much.
I never knew that SEE existed (so that sentence made absolutely no sense) but once I read a few of the comments, I went and looked it up. I never knew that even within the deaf community there was such a divide between different people.
I was surprised by how much I learned and the understanding I gained from this one video. Thank you so much for doing it!
and thank you to everyone who posted the comments, they were also a huge help!
~Jessica
