3/25/07, Part one: Gallaudet and me (ASL Vlog)
Transcript by Holly Savage
I was born deaf and grew up orally. My family is so good to me except that I had a difficult time catching up with my hearing friends by reading their lips.
At age 14, my family and I saw this really cool flyer about deaf camp. I decided to go for myself and to kill my curiousty. When I got on the bus to deaf camp, I saw other deaf people using sign language and I thought I was too good for them because I could talk as a deaf person. When we split into groups at deaf camp site, I started to get to know the group better and felt more comfortable with the language and with them as well. After 1 week at deaf camp, I was a little bit sad that it was all over and wasn’t satisfied. I did enjoyed a great experience at the camp. I had a hard time to get back to my normal routine and talk again.
When I graduated from high school, I went to a community college and 1 year later, it was 1988. My family and I saw on the news about Gallaudet Protest. I was fascinated with the situation at Gallaudet and debated if I should attend to the university for myself or not?
Now, you all know that I’m with my husband, Jon. Jon was so lucky that he had the opportunity to go to Gallaudet for the first time this past spring. Now, it’s my turn to go after 19 years dream. Yay!!
Holly,
I’m so thrilled you’re coming out to Gallaudet and fulfilling a dream you’ve had for so long! I know it be a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to see you and Jon. I miss you my friend!
Heather 🙂
It is good to hear your story. When are you going to Gallaudet? As a student or as a visitor. Hand waves for you.
Ooh you do look like your hubby! Nice seeing you in vlog for the first time. Been curious about you because Jon does vlog often. I assume maybe you are shy? Way to go … Same here I grew up til I learned ASL in 83 at Gallaudet. I am blessed I learned at my young age.
Hi, Holly!!
Finally see you on VLOG, smile!! Nice to “meet” you. Hope you will have blast time while visiting Gallaudet University. When I say blast time, it is for the very first time experience! Trust me, smile.
Have fun! deafk

Coooool!!! Good job Holly:) Wish I could have SEEN this video before we invited you for dinner with us! Dang! Even though, I know you’ve told me about this trip in person but, heck, with this video, I could even tell you more about Gally! LOL! GOOD LUCK and just have FUN!
It is like going to San Felipe, Baja. You won’t come back home the same person.
Hey Holly! A fabulous job vlogging for the first time! Loved the freeze frames as if you are giving a poetry! Beautiful! Enjoy Gallaudet!!!! We agree with Joe Dannis that you won’t come back the same person — a complete transformation of your experience there would be enriching and invaluable to seal your Deaf identity!

Right on, Holly! Beautiful vlog! Thanks for sharing your story. We look forward to seeing your comments about Gallaudet when you return home.
Wowie, what a very cool effect and it does project the real you!
I agree with Rene …
Thanks for sharing … 🙂 give my regards to Jon.
Hey, I am so glad you’re going to Gallaudet. It’s like home. My story is very similar to yours. Grew up oral, but had the opportunity when I was 15 to go to Gallaudet for 4 weeks in the summer time between 9th and 10th grades. Life changing experience. 🙂 I haven’t been back since, but I’m a teacher of the deaf now and the part of your vlog where you say you were depressed and sad when camp was over was my experience when I had to leave Gallaudet. Heart-wrenching. I was so sad to have to go back home where there was no sense of community. Glad you vlogged. Have a wonderful time. Gallaudet rocks!
